Becoming A Better Drummer
Learning to be a better drummer takes time. There is no easy way to do it. Many beginners stay beginners because they do not understand what needs to be done to see improvement. Many hours are usually spent looking at videos on youtube of drummers who paid the price for success. Instead of spending time looking at videos, time should be spent practicing. Don't get me wrong, looking at instructional videos is not bad, but if that is all that is done, you will get nowhere fast.
To improve, time needs to be spent practicing. It's best to take time everyday to practice. Even if you only have 20 minutes a day, you can see significant gains. You also need to know what to practice and how to practice. Here is where you can use instructional videos. They will teach you what to practice. After you find out what to practice, create a goal and start practicing. As far as how to practice, you need to make sure that you are focusing. This might seem very simple, but it's extremely important. 20 minutes of focused practice has more benefits that 2 hours of practicing while you are not focusing.
Another very important tip is to count out loud. The main job of is to keep time. Many students argue that they don't have to count. This is not true. Although it is difficult to count while playing, it is important. It even helps with independence. Drummers usually think about four way independence, but when you add counting, it creates five way independence. Practicing this way makes you a better drummer.
