EP stands for extended play.  An EP is a step up from a single.  It has more than one song, but it does not have enough songs to be considered an album.  EP's have advantages that can appeal to independent artists.  It is cheaper and easier than recording a full length album.  

 

EP's are a great way for independent artists to try to start getting their name out there.  It usually takes a few years for an independent artist to complete a full length album.  Doing 5 songs will take a lot less time, which will result in the artist getting his or her music to their fans faster.  The artist can also choose his or her best songs without the pressure of trying to fill up an album.  After increasing a fanbase, the artist can release a full length CD.  The EP will keep the artist's name in their fans' mind until the album is released.
